The Impact of Tourism on Georgia's Economy

The statistics outlined below are from an annual survey conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA).

In 2005, tourism in Georgia generated:

  • $16.6 billion for transportation, lodging, food, entertainment and recreation, and incidentals.
  • $4.3 billion in indirect expenditures, and $7.1 billion in induced expenditures.
  • Total travel expenditures of almost $28 billion.
  • 217,000 jobs bringing nearly $6.2 billion payroll income for the employees.
  • An increase of 2.5 percent from 2004 in travel-related jobs.
  • Nearly $1.3 billion in tax revenue for state and local governments, up 5.9 percent from 2004

Tourism is a multi-faceted industry that encompasses all travel and travel-related activities for:

  • Individuals spending at least one night away from home; or
  • Individuals traveling on day trips that are at least 50 miles, one-way away from home.

Tourism includes travel activities for the ALL of the following purposes: Business Travel, Meetings & Conventions, Individual Leisure Travel,Visiting Friends & Family, and Group Tour Travel.
